Programme

Plenary speakers

Our plenary speakers bring together leading voices from academia and industry to share the latest insights on slag valorisation and sustainable materials.

Gerhard Terblanche

Gerhard Terblanche  is a chemical engineer with extensive experience in the smelting industry. He began his career in 2001 at Xstrata Alloys and later held technical and management positions across various mining firms. His expertise spans ferrochrome production, ore beneficiation, pre-reduction and pre-oxidation processes, as well as AC and DC furnace operations and full smelter management. Gerhard joined Metix in 2023 as Metallurgical Product Manager and now leads the business development department as a member of the executive committee, bringing a strong track record of innovation and industry leadership to support Metix’s strategic growth.

Metix has successfully validated a process that transforms electric arc furnace (EAF) slag into two valuable products: recyclable iron units and a supplementary cementitious material for lower-carbon construction applications.

Pilot-scale operation confirmed the technical feasibility, operational reliability, and product quality required to support future commercial deployment. The programme demonstrated a practical pathway for converting a steelmaking by-product into high-value resources, advancing both circular economy and decarbonisation objectives.

Comprehensive process and product assessments establish a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 foundation, providing a robust basis for demonstration-scale development and future industrial implementation.

More speakers will be announced soon.
